Position summary

LSO Media Group is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to develop the core application services for LSO Workplace, a forthcoming platform serving small and midsize organizations. This full-time position reports to the Director of Product & Engineering, LSO Workplace. You will own agreed backend capabilities, with particular attention to tenant isolation, role-based access, reliable business workflows, and auditable changes.

You will help establish a practical architecture that supports differing customer needs without turning each deployment into a separate codebase. Working with frontend, integration and platform colleagues, you will define data models and APIs, evaluate infrastructure choices, and make operational behavior visible. AI-assisted development will be part of the engineering workflow, with generated contributions subject to the same review, security checks, and meaningful tests as other code. Early work will validate technical assumptions and support product decisions before broader release commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement application services, APIs, and data models for organizations, users, workplace resources, and prioritized business workflows.
  • Establish explicit tenant boundaries and enforce authorization on the server, including tests for cross-tenant access and changes in user permissions.
  • Implement role-based access controls and auditable records for consequential administrative changes, working with the platform engineer on appropriate controls.
  • Build reliable background work and event processing with clear retry behavior, idempotency, and recovery from partial failures.
  • Define data contracts with frontend and integration engineers, including validation, versioning, and useful error responses.
  • Design database changes, indexing, and query patterns around realistic workloads, with safe migration and rollback plans.
  • Use AI assistants or development agents for bounded coding, investigation, and test support while reviewing generated logic, dependencies, and security implications.
  • Add service telemetry, diagnostic documentation, and focused automated tests so the team can detect and investigate failures.
  • Work with product and privacy stakeholders on data minimization, retention, export, and deletion requirements, documenting tradeoffs and implementation limits.

Required qualifications

  • At least five years of professional backend engineering experience, including responsibility for production services and relational data models.
  • Strong proficiency in a backend language such as TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, or an equivalent language, plus practical API and database design skills.
  • Experience implementing authentication, server-side authorization, and tenant or account isolation for a business application.
  • Demonstrable use of AI coding assistants or development agents, supported by code review, targeted tests, and independent validation of generated behavior.
  • Experience diagnosing service failures and working with background jobs, database migrations, automated delivery, and collaborative code review.
  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with the ability to explain architecture decisions clearly.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with configurable SaaS products serving multiple organizations or customer segments.
  • Experience implementing audit histories, data lifecycle controls, and privacy-conscious operational reporting.
  • Experience supporting integration platforms, resource scheduling, workplace management, or employee-facing business software.

Measures of success

  • Core workflows have clear service boundaries, documented APIs, and verified tenant isolation.
  • Permission changes and consequential administrative actions behave predictably and are traceable.
  • Services meet agreed reliability and performance criteria under representative workloads, with useful diagnostics when failures occur.
  • Engineering decisions and AI-assisted changes are reviewable, tested, and maintainable by the wider team.

First 90 days

During your first 90 days, you will review proposed workflows and customer differences, outline the initial data model, and document architecture choices with the product director. You will implement a small service foundation covering organizations, identities, permissions, and one agreed workflow. You will validate tenant isolation and failure handling, demonstrate the service with frontend colleagues, and produce a prioritized plan for operational readiness and the next product capabilities.

Compensation

Proposed annual base salary of $135,000–$180,000 USD. The final offer will reflect relevant experience, qualifications and the agreed scope of the position, subject to approval. This range covers base pay only; any incentive compensation or benefits would be specified separately in an employment offer.

What to include in your application

Please include a nonconfidential project example describing an AI-assisted engineering task, the code or architecture you owned, and how you checked correctness, security, and failure behavior. A written explanation is sufficient when implementation details are confidential; no specific AI vendor certification is required.
