Position summary

The Financial Controller will translate the Chief Financial Officer’s financial priorities into accurate books, a disciplined close and useful operating information. LSO Media Group’s activities span media brands, advertising and planned software products, with additional business interests under development. You will establish accounting practices that make the performance and obligations of each activity understandable.

This position combines accounting leadership with direct execution. You will organize reconciliations, review transactions, coach accounting colleagues and document decisions that affect financial reporting. Working with business owners and external advisers, you will identify gaps early and bring recommendations to the CFO before those gaps affect decisions, cash management or reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly and year-end close calendar, assigning reconciliations, review steps and clear completion standards.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and entity or business-line coding so portfolio reporting remains consistent and traceable.
  • Review revenue, expenses, accruals, prepayments and fixed assets, documenting the accounting basis for material judgments.
  • Establish approval controls for spending, journal entries and changes to banking or vendor information.
  • Supervise accounting workflows and develop staff through documented procedures, practical feedback and cross-training.
  • Coordinate financial statements, schedules and supporting records requested by external accounting and tax advisers.
  • Reconcile intercompany activity where applicable and resolve discrepancies with the relevant business owners.
  • Present close results, control weaknesses and proposed corrections to the CFO with accountable follow-up dates.

Required qualifications

  • Substantial financial accounting experience, typically seven or more years, including responsibility for a monthly close.
  • Working command of U.S. financial reporting principles and the ability to document accounting judgments clearly.
  • Experience reviewing reconciliations, financial statements and the work of other accounting contributors.
  • Ability to improve accounting systems, spreadsheet controls and transaction approval processes.
  • Strong discretion, organized communication and an accounting degree or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • CPA designation or comparable advanced accounting qualification.
  • Experience with media, professional services, subscription software or a portfolio of operating businesses.
  • Experience introducing a financial system or preparing a growing organization for an external financial review.

Measures of success

  • The close produces complete, reviewed financial information on an agreed schedule.
  • Material balances can be traced to reconciled supporting records and documented accounting decisions.
  • Business owners understand spending approvals and correct coding requirements.
  • The CFO receives clear control issues and practical remediation plans.

First 90 days

Map the existing accounting environment and close responsibilities with the CFO. Review high-risk balances and transaction approvals, then agree a prioritized remediation plan. Establish a repeatable close checklist, reporting structure and reconciliation standards. Complete an initial close using the revised process and document remaining system, staffing or adviser needs.

Compensation

Proposed annual base salary of $125,000–$165,000 USD. The final offer will reflect relevant experience, qualifications and the agreed scope of the position, subject to approval. This range covers base pay only; any incentive compensation or benefits would be specified separately in an employment offer.

What to include in your application

Describe a close or control improvement you led, your personal responsibilities and how you established that the resulting financial information was reliable. Use nonconfidential examples.
