Position summary
The Credit Counseling Specialist supports people seeking a clearer understanding of budgeting, credit information and available next steps. Reporting to the Director of Client Services, you will conduct assigned educational or counseling sessions, document client-stated goals and explain relevant concepts in plain language. Services will be limited to the scope approved for the division and the training or credentials held for the assignment.
This role requires patient listening, accurate records and realistic communication. You will help clients organize questions and understand available options without promising particular credit outcomes or providing legal, tax or investment advice. Concerns beyond the role's qualifications will be escalated or referred to appropriate specialists. The work will initially include helping establish consistent session materials and supervised service practices as the division develops its programs.
Responsibilities
- Review assigned intake information and confirm the purpose, consent and scope of each client session.
- Help clients describe their goals and organize information relevant to approved budgeting or credit education.
- Explain general credit-report concepts, budgeting approaches and common financial terminology using reviewed materials.
- Develop a clear record of the session, client-selected next steps and any questions requiring follow-up.
- Recognize matters outside the approved counseling scope and coordinate referrals through the established process.
- Use approved systems and follow access, retention and confidentiality procedures for client information.
- Participate in case supervision, required training and quality reviews, applying feedback to subsequent sessions.
- Flag recurring client questions or barriers that should inform educational resources and service improvements.
Required qualifications
- Experience in credit counseling, financial education, client support or a related service role.
- Relevant counseling training or certification appropriate to assigned services, or the ability to complete required training before undertaking that work.
- Working knowledge of household budgeting and credit education within a clearly defined service scope.
- Patient communication and the ability to explain information without pressure, judgment or unsupported promises.
- Accurate recordkeeping and discretion when handling sensitive personal or financial information.
- Willingness to work under established supervision and refer matters beyond the role's qualifications.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience providing one-to-one financial education or supervised counseling.
- Familiarity with client case-management systems.
- Experience supporting clients with different learning or communication needs.
Measures of success
- Clients understand the information presented and the next steps they have chosen.
- Session records are accurate, appropriately limited and ready for supervisory review.
- Referral and escalation decisions remain within the approved service scope.
First 90 days
Complete the service-scope review, required training and supervised orientation with the Director of Client Services. Practice session and referral scenarios using approved materials, learn the case-record system and demonstrate appropriate handling of sensitive information. Begin assigned sessions only after readiness is confirmed, then use supervision and early feedback to improve clarity, documentation and follow-up.
Compensation
Proposed annual base salary of $55,000–$75,000 USD. The final offer will reflect relevant experience, qualifications and the agreed scope of the position, subject to approval. This range covers base pay only; any incentive compensation or benefits would be specified separately in an employment offer.
What to include in your application
Describe your relevant counseling or education experience and list applicable training or certifications. Use anonymized examples of how you explained a difficult concept or referred a question beyond your scope.
